10 Hill St., #22-L Newark, NJ 07102 (973) 242-5999 May 21, 2011 Thanks for your interest in the flyer racks. The "Instructions for Constructing Flyer Racks" are a little out of date. As regards the fiberglass material mentioned on the third page, I now have a new source, for a new material: the thinner, greenish fiberglass the racks I've been using lately are made of (It's about $50 for enough to make one rack). If you're interested, I can give you the details. But fiberglass is a bitch to machine. Its main advantages are for repeated packing and carrying in a suitcase: it's the least bulky of all, it's lighter than plywood or masonite, and it's more durable than foam-core or corrugated cardboard. But for a one-shot situation, foam-core or corrugated is probably your best choice -- it's cheap, lightweight and easy to work with. For longer-term use, plywood or masonite, though heavier, would hold up better. Plywood produces a more elegant result. But it has to be sanded and painted; and all the slots make this a tedious business. One-eighth-inch tempered hardboard (Masonite) is a serviceable alternative. I'm also including a printout of "Instructions for Assembling Flyer Racks." This shows one end of each dowel being "doubled" (by having a short length of dowel -- maybe a half inch long -- glued parallel to one end). This is an improvement I thought of after I did the plans, and it's useful for avoiding the problem discussed in the bracketed note at the end of Step 11 of the assembly instructions, whatever rack material you're using. Finally, because the plans for the poster-board pocket inserts may be a little confusing, I'm enclosing one actual insert, which should help make things clearer. Best of luck. Give me a call if you have any problems. Erwin S. (Filthy Pierre) Strauss ~ INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONSTRUCTING FLYER RACKS, WITH UNDERSCORES Erwin S. "Filthy Pierre" Strauss file C:\V\RA 10 Hill St., #22-L Newark, NJ 07102-5644 Octobe (973) 242-5999 revised Januar BEFORE PRINTING, SEE NOTE BELOW MACROS This writeup explains how to construct "Filthy Pierre"-brand (no pending, no trademark registered) racks, for displaying and distributi and similar things. Such a rack is pictured in Figure 1 below (the "gr software" I'm using -- essentially, a DOS spreadsheet -- is rather lim sorry). The components are easier to see on the "exploded" drawing tha (Figure 2). Detailed discussion of the components is in the text that the drawings. Each rack provides seven rows of three pockets each, in a raked configuration. Each pocket is designed to hold 8-1/2"-wide flyers, typ 11" high. The back row has an extra-tall backer, to support legal-leng long) flyers. The front piece is cut shorter than the rest, to better half-height flyers and other small items in the front row. Each rack has a "footprint" of 26" from front to back, and 26-1/4 right. Counting parts that overhang at the edges, it takes up 30" from back, and 28" left to right. The edges can be allowed to hang over the the supporting table; how far, depends on the material the racks are m and how heavily-loaded they are. I routinely put the racks on 18" wide for example (letting 4" of the bottom edge of the stringers hang over edges, front and back). Figure 1.
