Overall
Description - Up for bid, one 1984 AMC
Eagle 4-door sedan. Five speed standard transmission, 4.0L (258) engine.
- This
car was my pride-and-joy for two decades. I really hate to retire it,
but the car isn't reliable anymore and the cost of maintenance has
grown too high. (And fixing the known problems so it passes inspection
would cost more then the car's worth.)
- These cars were built
like tanks. They were the first true SUV. As an added benefit these
cars used many common parts with Jeeps, so even though they've been out
of production for twenty years you can still find lots of parts.
- The car runs reasonably well. It starts right up. It does ride a
bit hard since the chassis is basically a jeep.
- Odomoter
shows slighlty over 200,000 miles. Actual mileage about 250,000 since I
ran it for a couple years without a speedometer cable. (The exhaust
pipe melted the cable a couple of times and I had trouble finding
replacements.) This problem was eventually fixed when I had a custom
exhaust pipe installed up front.
- Car was converted from
automatic to five-speed manual in 1994. Conversion was actually very
easy since the parts were all compatible.
- Lots of extra parts
included in sale. So many extra parts in fact that they probably all
won't fit in the car...
- Note:
This auction is a relisting.
EBay cancelled the first attempt because you're not allowed to mention
or suggest that a parts car might be driveable. Sorry for the confusion
and inconvience for potential buyers
Condition Report, Car History, & Other Features
- I purchased the car in 1986 when it had 20,000 miles on it.
I'm the third owner.
- Car
completely restored during 1994-1995. Complete paint job, new factory
rugs installed, new wiring harness, new header panel, engine,
transmission, etc, etc. The restoration cost me about $10,000. Car was
like-new. (The insurance company made me get it appraised before they
would insure it.)
- Remanufactured engine installed in 1994
during restoration. Engine has approximately150000 miles on it.
- Factory
carburetor replaced with Holley high performance two-barrel carburetor.
(Carburator overhauled and totally rebuilt in 2004.)
- Transmission
converted from automatic to manual four-speed during restoration.
- Four speed transmission replaced with five-speed in late 1990's.
- Front and Rear Ends replaced in late 1990's with lower ratio
Front/Rear End to give car more power in fifth gear.
- Exhaust
system required custom bending of front pipe since the manual
transmission setup came from an 1983 Eagle while this was an automatic
1984 and the two didn't match exactly.
- Front passanger side
window is electric, all others manual (I got tired of leaning over to
open it so swapped in the electric assembly.) I never got around to
upgrading all the other windows to electric.
- Has 2" hitch
receiver installed. (No hitch or ball included in sale.)
- Car
was driven regulairly until 2005; since then it's only been used as a
temporary replacement when my other car was not available (or when it
snowed in the winter.) It's been started, brought up to operating
temperature and driven evey few weeks since then just to keep it
running.
- Due to the age and condition I've only taken the car
on local trips. It hasn't been more then 100 miles from home in several
years (I didn't want to take a chance of breaking down a long way from
home.)
- Drivers seat has rips and is dirty. Other seats are in
good condition.
- Rug is in pretty good shape, worn and dirty in
a few places but overall looks good.
- Header panel is old and worn.
- I
attempted to install factory A/C during the restoration(taken from
another Eagle in a salavage yard.) However the system just had too many
leaks in it and I gave up on this project.
Known Problems - This
model car (and the Jeep CJ on which parts of it is based) have a
history of breaking rear axles. I've broken several; the most recent in
2000. I still have one spare. I'm informed this is due to the retainer
being tightened too much.
- This particular model engine has
problems with the plastic valve cover leaking small amounts of oil
(there was a replacement available). Over the life of the car this has
caused the wiring to have problems which I've had to have fix (ie,
tuneup) several times. (When the wiring had problems the engine would
miss or sometimes lose power intermittently. Last time it happened I
found a loose connection in a coil wire.)
- Car is very cold-blooded.
Runs very rough until the engine warms up. (This was also a common problem
on this model engine.)
- Engine
stalls when wet. (See problem with oil on wiring above). I've learned
not to drive it at high speed when it's raining. Otherwise water gets
spashed up into the engine conpartment, gets the wiring wet, and the
car just stalls. Then you wait at the side of the road 10-15 minutes
for the residual heat from the engine to dry out the wiring and it will
start up just fine again. It's happened in the past and problem always
was fixed with a complete tuneup and wire replacement.
- Exhaust
system is rusted out. It still works partially, the car is not too loud
(sounds like a souped-up car), but the neighbors still glance up when I
drive by.
- Vaccuum actuators which control shifting from
two-to-four-wheel-drive are rusted and car is permanently set to
four-wheel-drive only. (Actuators were specific to the AMC Eagle model
(not the Jeep) and you can't find them any more.)
- Minor
accident when I hit a deer about five years ago. The front grill is
broken, plus the right front [passenger] side fender was pushed back
slightly. As a result the passenger door sticks and must be pulled hard
to open.
- Another small ding on exterior body when an unlicensed
15-year-old driving a friends car in the supermarket parking lot backed
into my car last winter. (There were four teenage girls in the car and
they all quickly drove off, but not before bystanders jotted down the
license number. The damage was only cosmetic and not worth fixing.) All
dings and dents visible in pictures below.
- The left rear and
right front door handles are very stiff. So the doors are hard to open,
and when closing you must push down the handles hard to make sure the
door latches.
- The sun roof leaks and has been removed and replaced
with plexiglass. (But sun roof not included in sale as noted below.)
- Interior trim missing or broken in several areas.
- Vinyl roof has rust bubbling in a number of spots.
- Rust in a number of spots around the body. Again look at the pictures.
- Cruise
Control is currently disconnected. It was working at one time however
the control is tied to the speedometer cable, and I disconnected it
when I was having problems with melting cables from the exhaust pipe.
- Tach
doesn't work, needs to be replaced. I could never find one in a junk
yard since most Eagles had the digital clock in that position.
Disclaimers & Sale Limitations
- Ebay required disclaimer for parts cars:
This
vehicle is being sold for parts only and is not operational or street
legal. Therefore, upon purchase, it will need to be either towed or put
on a trailer. eBay encourages its members to learn about their state
laws governing vehicle sales prior to the sale or purchase of a vehicle.
- Car is sold AS-IS, with no warrenty other then it will start. Note
that because it is not inspected you cannot legally drive it.
- While
the runs, I want to emphasise there are two issues that prevent it from
being driven. One is the exhaust system is rusted out. Second the
wiring is old and the car will not run when the wires get wet (as
happens when you drive when it's raining), it will take a complete
tuneup and write replacement to fix this problem.
- Car is
twenty-three years old with a quarter-million miles on it. There are
numerous small "annoying" problems typical of older cars. (Window crank
handles on two of the windows slip a bit, center-console gage panel has
flakey wiring connections so the gages read too low, dome light holder
broken, windshield wiper knob needs re-glueing, hood release cable
broken and replaced with pull cable behind grill, etc.)
- Sunroof
is NOT INCLUDED IN SALE and was removed. I needed it for my other car
and it would cost me more to buy a replacement then this car is worth.
(It leaked anyway and would have had to be pulled out and reinstalled
to seal the leaks.) I have plexiglass that replaced it although I
cannot tell if that fixed the leaks.
- CD/Radio and speakers have
been removed. It was old and had several problems and I pulled it out
with the intention of putting in a new one but never finished the
project.
- Canoe and rack not included in sale either. :-)
(Although if you really need one, I have an older model metal roof rack
you can have to help haul away the extra parts.)
- Car is located in Nashua, New Hampshire. (About 45 miles northwest of Boston.)
- Pickup only, although I can probably pick you up somewhere reasonable. Car must
be picked up within a week.
- The registration expired the end of February, so buyer will have to get a
temporary tag from the DMV to move it (unless you're putting it on a
trailer). They cost $10.
- Once the auction concludes and payment
is made I can send a Bill-of-sale as a fax or email attachment so you
can get a temporary tag right away.
- I reserve the right to reject bids from those with negative or low feedback.
- Payment via PayPal preferred.

I checked with the Department of Safety. Temporary tags cost $10. You'll
need a Bill-Of-Sale plus your drivers license. Once you have a
temporary tag you have ten days in which you can move the car.
Once the auction concludes and payment is made I can send a bill of sale as
an email attachment so you can get a temporary tag right away.

information:Update:
I've had a number of questions regarding the driveability of the car
from people who want to pick up the car and drive it back.
While the car is driveable, I want to emphasise there are two issues.
One is the exhaust system is rusted out, you'd have to put up with a
lot of noise. Second the wiring is old and the car will not run
when the wires get wet. If you plan on trying to drive the car
home you'd have to do it on a sunny day when the road isn't wet.

Q: |
do
you think this car would make it to exeter nh , route 101 too route

A: |
Probably. It's been to
Boston and back not too long ago which is about the same distance. |
Q: |
Hi,
I live about 75 miles away. Do you think this car could be driven that
distance without breaking down? Cant afford a tow truck :) Thanks -Ernie
|
Feb-27-07 |
A: |
Don't see why not. It's hard
to predict though with a car of this age; it could last another 10,000 miles or only 10.
|
Q: |
Noticed on the engine pix that the oil cap on the valve cover is missing. Hope that might help ya, Kyle |
Mar-02-07 |
A: |
Yeah,
I noticed that as well. I had just put in a quart of oil before I took
the shots and didn't realize the cap wasn't on while I was taking the
