Judges' Choice—Best Fairy Tale
#18   Artist: Emily Rose Pitchko
Grade 10, Smith Academy, Hatfield, Mass
Title: The Heart of The Galaxy
Medium: ???
Inspiration or Source: Once in awhile, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale."- Anonymous. That quote inspired me to create a visual dream supporting that idea. The two folks standing there amid the galaxy, represents a love that most women desire but do not get to experience. The galaxy's colors in the painting catch that warm heart emotion to boost the painting's fantasy effect. Thus the name, The Heart of The Galaxy.

#19   Artist: Shannen Adamites
Grade 12, Smith Academy, Hatfield, MA
Title: Sakura no Yoru (Night of the Cherry Blossoms)
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Board
Inspiration or Source: I have always had an interest in Japanese culture and history and I wanted to reflect that in a painting that combines Japanese influence with a subtle tone of fantasy and surrealism, which are my main focuses in art. I created this painting on an extremely cold night, wishing that it was spring again when everything is in bloom and very vibrant and beautiful. The Cherry Blossom flower, in Japanese culture, is a metaphor for the fragility of life since they only last a few weeks until they are all blown away in the wind, and it also represents the emotions of love and affection, which are concepts I like to include in my art (represented by the girl). However, to twist the previously mentioned metaphor a bit, I wanted to incorporate the idea of a cycle; even though the blossoms will blow away in time, they will always re-bloom, and this is represented by the larger, upside-down tree which is also in bloom and the petals are being blown away. Either way you hold it, the petals are always blooming and flowing away.

#22   Artist: Ian Crowe
Grade 12, Billerica Memorial High School
Title: Nirvana
Medium: Electronic Art-based upon source material of artist’s own creation. All of the source materials were hand drawn then scanned and the image was created in Photoshop. (Source).
Inspiration or Source: I like space battles and I like big, dramatic looking art. I tried to combine the two, while having somewhat of a grungy feel to the whole thing (hence the simple coloring and bold contrasts). There are some classic steam punk elements as well as a bit of Warhammer 40k in this, though neither the ships nor the characters are directly taken from it. I used the classic red and blue coloring for "good" (blue, the Navy) and "evil" (red, the pirate) because they are almost more universally recognized as conflicting teams than black and white now. It also adds to the sort of "icon" feel of the the image, as it is a symbol that is immediately recognized, along with the skull and fluer-de-lis. To "modernize" the skull and crossbones, and to add some uniqueness, I chose a gear "halo" over it versus something crossed underneath. Gears are associated with machinery and technology, as well as steampunk, so it rolled the whole thing into one.The Fluer-de-lis is clearly recognized as the more legitemate end of things, but not as cliche as a star.As far as the ships go, I tried to contrast law and unlaw by having the Navy ship be all rigid and straight, whereas the pirate ship is loose and organic, a contrast which reflects the differences in mentalities as well.
